What is a drain down?

Modified on Thu, 12 Sep at 11:26 AM

Turning off your stopcock will prevent flooding, but water can still be hiding in every pipe and inside the boiler, which when frozen, can cause huge amounts of damage. A drain down protects by removing water from the pipes and preparing any systems which contain or use water (such as boilers, showers, toilets etc). By booking your drain down with Haven, you will not need to worry about damage like this ruining your holiday home and taking the fun out of ownership.

How to prepare your holiday home for winter:

Book a drain down to be performed on your holiday home online

Turn your stopcock off every time you leave your holiday home between 31 October 2024 – 1 March 2025

Close all windows and skylights securely to minimise moisture getting into your holiday home
Empty and clean out fridges and freezer, disconnect from the power supply and leave the doors ajar
Leave internal doors open to allow airflow, this will help prevent condensation build-up
Stack any removable upholstery and mattresses away from the outer walls and place in the middle of the room

Place moisture traps around the rooms as this will extract the moisture in the air and reduce condensation

If you have an alarm, ensure it is switched on

Remove all valuables and leave cupboards and curtains open

Place a sign in the window to say ‘no valuables have been left in this holiday home and the alarm
is on’. (These are available from Reception)

Have your combination boiler and/or water heaters serviced, this will help prevent any unexpected breakdown
